Who were Anita and Will Unruh?

Anita Unruh Memorial Fund

By: Barbara Aderhold, KCA Recording Secretary

Established June 2007

Will Unruh, a longtime resident of Keystone, donated $25,000.00 to the Keystone Civic Association with a request that the Membership establish a memorial fund and recommend projects and/or recipients for these funds that are consistent with Anita’s spirit and compassion.

This fund was established to recognize Anita’s dedication and service to the community through the KCA.  Anita was also very active in the Fern Garden Club.

A committee was set up to come up with guidelines for the Fund.  The committee:  Frances Moore, Carol Prentiss, Rosie Goldsworthy and Jo Schellenberg.  Ideas were taken from the Membership which included:  Art Scholarship; Art Festival; Photo Contes; Equipment/food for homebound residents; Para Olympics; feral cat problems.

The guidelines were that the person/event be within and contribute to the Keystone/Odessa Planning area.  It was decided that suggestions be brought to the Board of Directors and they, The Board, would then bring to the General Membership for a vote.

The first event which was sponsored by the Anita Unruh Fund was called Picnic and Music in the Park.  This event featured Keystone’s own Roger Casey’s band The Dukes of Juke.

The Picnic and Music in the Park occurred for several years and eventually morphed into what we now know as the Chili Cook Off and Business Expo.
